GS Caltex is expected to accelerate its green transformation (GX) by reducing carbon emissions and producing and exporting CORSIA (CEF) sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

GS Caltex produced 5,000 kiloliters of CORSIA SAF by mixing neat SAF, supplied by Neste, the world¡¯s biggest bio-fuel com¬pany in Finland, and conventional aviation fuel, then delivered it to Japan¡¯s Narita Airport on Sept. 13.

It is noteworthy that LG Caltex has become the first Korean refinery company to export CORSIA SAF, certified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), on a commer¬cial scale through collaboration among three companies from Korea, Japan and Finland.

Such SAF is to be sold to Japan¡¯s major airlin¬ers, including All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, in from now on.

LG Caltex obtained CORSIA certification from the international certification organi¬zations ISCC, and the CORSIA SAF business has enabled LG Caltex to supply bio ship¬ping oil and sustainable aviation fuel on a commercial scale by securing a competitive edge in the global bio-fuel market.

CORSIA stands for Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.

ICAO make it obligatory to reduce carbon emissions from 2027, so airliners can be rec¬ognized for carbon emission reduction by using CORSIA SAF.

GS Caltex, mindful of the trend, has prepared for supplying CORSIA SAF to airliners through close cooperation with Neste and Itochu since last year. Starting with the export, the refinery is expected to continue to sell CORSIA SAF on a commercial scale.

Amid global regulations on carbons and greenhouse gas emission reduction trends, the use of sustainable aviation fuel will be getting more compulsory.

The trends are likely to cut carbon emissions up to 80 per¬cent compared to those of the conventional aviation fuel.

A ship carrying CORSIA sustainable aviation fuel, exported by LG Caltex, h arrived in Chiba Port, Japan, on Sept. 13. The SAF is being unloaded to an aviation fuel tank at Narita Airport.

The European Union makes it mandatory for airline operations to mix at least 2 percent of SAF into the conventional fuel oil starting 2025, with the portion set to increase to 6 percent by 2030, 20 percent by 2035 and 70-percent by 2050.

In late Augst, the Korean government announced strategies to spread SAF.

The government plans to make it mandatory for Korean airlines to use SAF with a mixing ratio of less than 1 percent.

Amid rising international standards on carbon emission reduction in the aviation sector and no exclusive SAF production plant in Korea, the project has enabled for GS Caltex to not only join the government policy of spreading SAF, but also contribute to improving trade balance by solving a shortage of aviation fuel in Japan.

GS Caltex plans to aggressively comply with the gov¬ernment¡¯s policies by exploring diverse busi¬nesses on top of the supply of the SAF.

Lee Seung-hoon, head of the S&T Division at GS Caltex, said, ¡°It is an example of build¬ing new value chain based on each compa¬ny¡¯s expertise under the full support of the Korean and Japanese governments by iden¬tifying customers¡¯ needs in accordance with the decarbonation trend of the global avia¬tion industry, and GS Caltex plans to further expand cooperation with diverse partners from now on.¡±

Alexander Kueper, executive vice presi¬dent at Neste in charge of SAF business, said Partner companies such as GS Caltex and Itochu has been able to develop a new SAF supply chain by fully cooperation each other, and it is an example of demonstrating how to get SAF more easily not only in the Asia- Pacific region but also the whole world.

Taetsuya Imada, COO of the energy busi¬ness at Itochu, said the supply is expected to contribute to resolving a shortage of aviation fuel in Japan, and Itochu plans to make efforts to continuously supply CORSIA SAF in cooperation with GS Caltex and Neste.
