Dongkuk Steel Group will erect a large installation at the Songhyeon Green Plaza in Seoul in cooperation with the globally renowned architect designer Thomas Heatherwick for the 5th Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism.
Dongkuk Steel Group struck an MOU to give patronage for the successful hosting of the 5th Seoul Biennale with the Seoul Metropolitan government on April 15.
The Seoul Biennale is an international event held biennially by SMG since 2017.
The goal of the event is to explore the future of cities and new city architecture paradigms.
The 5th Seoul Biennale is scheduled to last for two months from September under the theme “Radically More Human.”
Thomas Heatherwick, also known as the “Leonardo da Vinchi of the UK,” will serve as general director of the Seoul Biennale.
Dongkuk Steel Group proposed the use of Luxteel — an eco-friendly, premium architectural material, to convey the value as its architectural material in accordance with the Biennale’s core message — human-oriented architecture.
Vice Chmn. Jang Se-wook of Dongkuk Steel Group would have shown a deep interest in the use of Luxteel as a premium construction material.
Heatherwick is said to have highly evaluated the values of Luxteel as a construction material – no limitations in color and texture expressions, an eco-friendly replacement to traditional stone and wood, and a construction material that hasn’t corroded for 30 years.
The director general of the Biennale used Luxteel in the whole outside wall of the main installation.

Dongkuk Steel held a ceremony to celebrate the first production of “Decay Green Bar” and “D-Mega Beam” at its Pohang Steelworks on April 10.
Decay Green Bar is a new specialty rebar, produced by Dongkuk Steel, which connects coil, quake-proof and extreme low-temperature rebar.
The latest product, reinforced with fiberglass and polymer resin, is corrosion-resistant, greater strength, compared to the conventional rebar.
It is an eco-friendly product, discharging less carbon.
Decay Green Bar is used on roads and bridges since it is not corroded by deicing agents and it is also utilized on railway tracks since it minimizes electric signals’ impact, the steelmaker said.
The “D-Mega Beam” connects steel plates in a structural shape, using the latest welding equipment imported from Corimpex Corp. of Italy.
It can be produced according to customized needs without size limitations, enabling the production of super-large-size ones that have been never seen in Korea.
Dongkuk CM Opens Office in Australia to Meet High-End Architecture Demand
Dongkuk CM held a ceremony to open an office in Australia on April 10.
Australia is the eighth country in which Dongkuk CM entered, following the United States, Japan, Mexico, India, Thailand, Vietnam and Germany.
For Dongkuk CM, Oceania is a core region, accounting for 20 percent of the company’s total color steel plate exports.
The company, which entered the region in 2015, saw exports surge five times on the back of rising demand.
