Volunteers participate in drive to raise awareness toward maritime preservation through coastal purification

Korea Marine Environment Management Corp. (KOEM) held ¡°2025 MPA Capacity Development Workshop in Korea¡± in cooperation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in Busan from April 28 to April 30. 

The workshop took place in conjunction with the 10th Our Ocean Conference, held in Busan from April 28 to April 30. 

The event was attended by about 20 working-level officials in charge of Marine Protected Area in Asia from six countries, including Cambodia and Indonesia. 




Working-level officials in charge of Marine Protected Areas in Asia from six countries participate in the 2025 MPA Capacity Development Workshop in Korea, which took place in Busan from April 28 and April 30. 


KOEM introduced guidelines designating Korea¡¯s marine protected areas, management and monitoring systems. 

Participants were given the chance to tour the Oryukdo Marine Protected Areas, Busan¡¯s representative marine protected area, and experience management examples at first hand. 

Participants were given the opportunity to observe international discussions on marine protection and better understand the need for connecting marine protected areas with international policies.. 

KOEM and IUCN have been engaged in related education and technology exchange every year since 2021, when they struck an MOU on expanding marine protected areas and ramping up the effectiveness of management.

A KOEM official said, ¡°The workshop has served as an opportunity to build up network and policy cooperation foundation among nations beyond simple sharing of technologies, and Korea¡¯s MPA policies have proved a possibility of becoming a model in international society.¡±

KOEM President Kang said, ¡°Korea¡¯s execution and field capabilities of marine protection policies can be demonstrated through the workshop, and we will make efforts to utilize marine protected areas as international strategic assets by expanding connectivity with diverse countries and institutions in the future.¡± 



KOEM Conducts Marine Environment Preservation Campaigns on Occasion of Ocean Day

The Korea Marine Environnent Management Corp. (KOEM) conducted citizens¡¯ participatory events and maritime environment campaigns, including coastal purification campaigns, in Yeosu on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Ocean Day from May 15 to May 16. 

The events were designed to raise people¡¯s awareness toward the ocean on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Ocean Day and remind them of the significance of maritime environment preservation. 

An event took place with citizens at E-Mart Yeosu under the theme, ¡°Hello, My Sea.¡± Participants were given the chance to express their appreciation toward the sea, and KOEM allowed them to experience eco-friendly products, such as mats made with marine waste. 

On May 16, engaged in coastal purification activities were: KOEM, E-Mart, UIKCompany, other participants of the ¡°Gapljiwoo¡± plastic recycling campaign; Jeonnam Center for Creative Economy & Innovation; and W.H.Y, a volunteer group of Chonnam National University. 

Despite rainy weather conditions, participants collected about 235 kg of coastal waste through hard work and agreed to ramp up cooperation in the future. 

KOEM President Kang Yong-seok said, ¡°I¡¯m pleased to conduct a meaningful campaign with citizens on the occasion of Ocean Day, and KOEM will continue efforts to protect the maritime environment along with the regional society in the future.¡±

Meanwhile, KOEM is going to conduct a variety of maritime environment campaigns, such as an online drive called ¡°writing letters to the sea¡± until May 31. 


KOEM Holds Workshop to Ramp-Up Cap Capabilities to Cope with Disasters

Korea Marine Environment Management Corp. has been strengthening systematic education and working-level capabilities to brace for disasters. 

KOEM held ¡°2025 Disaster Resources Management and R&D Capability Beef-up Workshop¡± at Martine Environment Education and Training Institute in Busan from March 28 to March 30. 

The workshop was designed to raise the practical use of a disaster resources management system, and strengthen an R&D foundation, to explore future growth engines. 

Some 40 working-level officials from KOEM headquarters and affiliated agencies, including Kim Wook, head of the Marine Pollution Control Division, participated in the event. 

Participants shared ways of exploring new R&D tasks and the previous year¡¯s exemplary management cases of maritime pollution control devices. 

They were given the chance to listen to a lecture by a pollution control equipment expert, and undergo hands-on education using pollution control equipment installed on the multipurpose, large oil spill response vessel ¡°ENDAM¡±.

Kim Wook, head of the Marine Pollution Control Division at KOEM, said, ¡°The workshop was a significant opportunity to discuss disaster resources management and the direction of R&D, and KOEM will ramp up capabilities to cope with national disasters through outside and inside cooperation in the future.¡±
