Nongshim held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a pilot greenhouse as a center of exporting ¡°K-Smart Farm¡± to the Middle East at the Riyadh National Agricultural Center in Saudi Arabia on April 21.

The event took place with Vice Minister Park Beom-soo of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) and Al-Mushaiti, Deputy Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, in attendance.

The ceremony was part of a project to boost smart farm exports Nongshim agreed to implement in cooperation with Korea Agriculture Technology Promotion Agency (KOAT) in July 2024.

The project, hosted by MAFRa and organized by KOAT, calls for building a Korean smart-farm model in Saudi Arabia to help the Korean smart farm industry enter the Middle Eastern market.

A consortium, formed by Nongshim in cooperation with three SMEs, was selected to participate in the project.

Dignitaries, including Vice Minister Park Beom-soo of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) and Al-Mushaiti, Deputy Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, attend a groundbreaking ceremony for Nongshim¡¯s construction of a pilot greenhouse as a center of exporting ¡°K-Smart Farm¡± to the Middle East at the Riyadh National Agricultural Center in Saudi Arabia on April 21.

A smart farm, covering 2,000 sq. meters, will be dedicated by December, and it is to be outfitted with a variety of K-smart farm technologies, such as advanced agricultural robots and environment control solutions.

Nongshim plans to build two versions of smart farms — a vertical farm and a glass greenhouse.

The vertical farm will grow leafy green vegetables, such as frilled ice kale while the glass greenhouse will cultivate cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and paprika. Leafy vegetables with less bitter tastes, favored by local people in the Middle East and fruits and vegetables with sweet tastes will be cultivated.

The agricultural produce, to be grown by Nongshim will be sold through the existing distribution networks of Saudi Arabia¡¯s local partners, and shops will be opened at local distribution networks, such as Carrefour and Lulu Hypermarket as well as e-Commerce platforms such as Amazon and noon.com.

Nongshim plans to secure competitiveness by stably operating smart farm packages tailored to meet local needs and build a cluster combining industries related to smart farm, such as produce research, processing, distribution and sale to make it a global market entry center.

A Nongshim official said, ¡°Nongshim, representing Korea, plans to have K-smart farm known in Saudi Arabia, and with a ground-breaking ceremony for a smart farm in Saudi Arabia, Nongshim will accelerate efforts to enter the global smart farm market.¡±
