Discusses safety management situation of high-risk workers and direction for improvement

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) conducted safety inspections of high-risk workers at organizations related to power plants. 

The move comes in the wake of the June 2 death of a subcontract worker at the Taean Coal-fired power plant of Korea Western Power. 

On June 12, Dir.-Gen. Choi Yeon-woo of the Power Policy Bureau at MOTIE presided over a safety management inspection meeting of power related organizations, where they discussed the safety management situation of high-risk workers and the direction for improvement. 

Among the participating power related institutions were Korea Electric Power Corp., Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Korera South-East Power, Korea Southern Power, Korea East-West Power, Korea Western Power, Korea Midland Power and Korea Electrical Safety Corp. (KESCO).

Participants expressed their condolences during the meeting to the loved ones of the fatal victim of at the Taean Power Complex. 

They offered their heartfelt sympathies and apologized for the serious wounds the accident caused to the hearts of the victim¡¯s family and colleagues, and for undermining public trust in power related entities.

Participants of the meeting discussed the current safety management regimes for the dangers of serious industrial disasters, such as electrocutions, and views on improving safety management for each entity and creating safer work conditions. 

The participating organizations agreed to proactively cooperate with the government to ramp up steps to ensure safety, such as protecting devices and improving facilities following the review of high-danger work and work conditions, supporting the overhaul of safety management regimes of their cooperative companies and make efforts to build safety awareness of field-oriented work sites and institutional reform. 

Dir.-Gen. Choi said, ¡°I express deep worry about the endless occurrence of safety accidents in the power industry in the past few years, and I ask for exploring dangerous factors, and improving them, while communicating with workers so our discussions can translate to actions.¡±


KESCO Opens Publicity Pavilion at International Electric Power Industry Expo Korea 2025

Korea Electrical Safety Corp. (KESCO) operated a publicity pavilion at International Electric Power Industry Expo Korea 2025, which took place at EXCO in Daegu from June 11 to June 13. 

International Electric Power Industry Expo Korea 2025 was the largest fair of electrical equipment and power industry outside the Seoul metropolitan area, marking the fifth rendition of exhibition. 

About 110 exhibitors in the power, power transition and distribution, power transformation equipment and nuclear power industries participated in the fair, and set up about 400 booths.

Korea Electrical Safety Corp. introduced its role in the industry in the wake of widespread digital transformation, and publicized energy safety strategies under the theme ¡°People¡¯s KESCO Leading Energy Safety.¡± 

KESCO promoted technologies, such as ESS integrated management systems. 

Spectators at the KESCO Pavilion were given the chance to demonstrate in person KESCO¡¯s major responsibilities and safety guidelines through touch-style display. 

KESCO held a Q&A session designed to help youth grappling with difficulties of landing jobs. Recently hired staffers posted at the site, and held one-on-one talks with job seekers. 

KESCO President Nam Hwa-young said, ¡°As society is undergoing rapid changes, electrical safety management using advanced technologies are essential, and from now on, KESCO will make efforts to advance technologies to prevent electrical disasters.¡±


1st Electricity Safety Management Master Plan Established

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held the 35th Energy Committee Meeting and approved the first electricity safety management master plan on March 14. 

MOTIE and KESCO said it was the first electricity safety management master plan established under the Act on Electrical Safety Management, which went into force in April 2021. 

The master plan was worked out over meetings and consultation sessions among industry, academic circles, experts and related organizations and approved after consultations among related ministries and organizations.
