The APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting wrapped up its 15th session in Busan and adopted a joint statement on Aug. 28.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) said global energy leaders converged on BEXCO in Busan, APEC Nurimaru House and other areas from Aug. 25 to Aug. 29 and successfully concluded ¡°Energy Super Week¡±.

Energy Super Week was a globally unprecedented mega event in which the APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting coincided with the 16th Clean Energy Ministerial Meeting (CEM16), the Mission Innovation Ministerial Meeting and ¡®WCE 2025¡¯ (World Climate Industry EXPO) in one week.

The joint statement, issued by the APEC EMM during the Energy Super Week, was the first among energy ministerial meetings of G20 and G7 that have taken place so far this year.

The unanimous conclusion of the joint statement by the APEC ENM takes on a significance since the core agenda focuses on power grid & energy security, expanding of stable power supply, and AI-based energy innovation, proposed by Korea.

Korea demonstrated its global energy leadership to the international community through Energy Super Week.

CEM16 and the Mission Innovation Ministerial Meeting, the start of Energy Supper Week, attracted 41 government delegations, 111 international organizations and 105 global companies.

They discussed key agenda items, such as clean energy transition to cope with climate change, industrial decarbonization, future fuels, energy and AI.

The discussions are to be taken up as key agenda items of the G20 Energy Ministerial Meeting, to be held in October and UNFCCC COP 30, to be held in November.

This indicates that Korea is expected to contribute to pinpointing the global energy agenda related to climate change.

Korea presented to the international community a new model in which ¡®WCE 2025¡¯ World Climate Industry EXPO took place in conjunction with the APEC EMM, and attracted a large number of global energy government high-level officials, experts and companies, making the expo a top-tier international event.

World Climate Industry EXPO, the 3rd rendition of the exhibition this year, attracted 16,587 spectators on the first day of the fair, 15 percent more than last year.

The exhibition also successfully concluded as it coincided with 12 international conferences and some 60 side events.

IEA Secretary General Fatih Biro, on a visit during Energy Super Week, said power demand was on a sharp rise on the back of the expanded supply of air-conditioners & EVs and AI data centers, but the construction of power grid networks cannot catch up with that, and Korea¡¯s policy on energy expressway may be highly evaluated.

MOTIE Minister Kim Jung-kwan said, ¡°Energy Super Week takes on a great significance since Korea has demonstrated a leadership to draw key agendas in the energy sector from the international community and played a lead in reaching a consensus, and we will make efforts to contribute to the international community by further evolving the new government¡¯s energy policies, such as the construction of energy expressway, expanded supply of renewable energies and the building of next-generation power grid.¡±

APEC Successfully Wraps Up SOM3 in Incheon

APEC¡¯s 3rd Senior Officials¡¯ Meeting and Related Meetings (SOM3) successfully took place in Incheon from July 26 to Aug. 15.

The meeting, presided over by Chmn. Yoon Sung-mi, attracted some 5,800 people, including 21 APEC member and observer delegations, and APEC secretariat officials to have an in-depth discussion on economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

SOM3 also coincide with some 200 diverse meetings, such as ones of major committees, such as the Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI) and the Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation (ESC), working groups under the umbrella of the committees, workshops and private-public sector meetings.

The SOM3 meeting is a significant stage to flesh out the performances of the APEC 2025 Korea Summit and APEC Ministerial Meeting, to be held in Gyeongju in October.

Member countries had an in-depth discussion on a variety of long-term projects, such as ramping up service competitiveness in the region, improving the corporate activity environment and strengthening cooperation in the APEC financial sector.

The Capacity Building Needs Initiative (CBNI), initiated by Korea, has been implemented since 2012. The CBNI aims at building the capacity of developing economies to enhance their understanding of FTAs/RTAs and build their capacities to negotiate comprehensive agreements of high-quality and that include new issues.

As the CBNI Phase V action plan has been approved, so Korea continues to play a leading role in the APEC region.
