Doosan Enerbility will soon embark on the decommissioning of the Kori Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1, the first commercial nuclear power plant built in Korea.

On Nov. 4, Doosan Enerbility announced that it had signed a contract with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHN) to perform nuclear decommissioning work on the Kori Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1¡¯s Uncontrolled Area internals and yard.

The signing ceremony, which was held that day at KHNP¡¯s Radiation Health Institute, was attended by the related parties, including Cho Seok-jin, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer (CNO) of KHNP, and Kim Jong-doo, CEO of Doosan Enerbility¡¯s Nuclear Business Group.

This is the first nuclear decommissioning work to be carried out after final approval was secured in June for the planned decommissioning.

The project holds significance as it signals the start of nuclear decommissioning projects in Korea.

The Kori Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 was built in 1978 as Korea¡¯s first commercial nuclear power plant.

The plant was shut down permanently in 2017 and close to eight years later, the decommissioning of Kori Unit 1 is being carried out.

Doosan Enerbility, which is participating as the lead contractor of the project consortium, will be carrying out the project with HJ Shipbuilding & Construction and KEPCO KPS through 2028.

The nuclear decommissioning of the uncontrolled area, where radiation levels do not exceed regulatory limits, will entail carrying out decommissioning work on secondary circuit equipment, such as turbines and piping, in consecutive phases.

The secondary circuit refers to the turbine and generator-related equipment that is used to produce electrical energy.

The thermal energy generated from the primary circuit, which consists of the reactor, is converted by the secondary circuit into high-temperature, high-pressure steam, which is used to drive the turbine to produce electricity.

¡°We find it truly meaningful to have our company Doosan Enerbility take on Korea¡¯s first nuclear decommissioning project here at Kori Unit 1,¡± said Kim Jong-doo, CEO of Doosan Enerbility¡¯s Nuclear Business Group.

¡°By applying the decades of technological expertise and know-how that we have acquired over the years, we will do our utmost to ensure the successful execution of the project.¡±

Through this project, Doosan Enerbility aims to solidify its position in the global nuclear decommissioning market, which is forecast to continuously grow.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the number of permanently shut-down nuclear reactors is expected to rise from 214 today to 588 by 2050.

Doosan Enerbility,KEPCO KPS to Jointly Develop Global Power Projects

Doosan Enerbility announced on Nov. 28 that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with KEPCO KPS on collaborating to strengthen their global competitiveness in the area of global power projects.

The signing ceremony, which was held at Doosan Enerbility¡¯s Changwon headquarters on Nov. 27, was attended by Kim Hong-youn, President of KEPCO KPS, and Yun Yo-han, Chief Marketing Officer of Doosan Enerbility, among others

The MOU was pursued as part of joint efforts to effectively target the global new build and aging power plant modernization projects by combining the forces of Doosan Enerbility, which holds expertise in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work and power plant components manufacturing, with that of KEPCO KPS, a company recognized for its power plant maintenance capabilities.

With the signing of the MOU, the two companies will be collaborating on the following areas – joint development of global power projects and pursuit of technological partnerships across entire plant lifecycle, development of performance improvement and environmental control system installation projects for aging power plants, and sharing of information regarding global power projects and technological trends.

¡°Both companies, with our proven capabilities backed by a solid track record built up over the years in the global power market, have come to join forces now in pursuing global power projects,¡± said Yohan Yun, CMO of Doosan Enerbility.

¡°Based on our strong partnership, we aim to achieve tangible results in the global market.¡±

Doosan Enerbility and KEPCO KPS plan to jointly pursue the development of various types of global power projects in the regions of Central Asia, Africa and Southeast Asia, such as power plant performance improvement and plant rehabilitation projects.
