The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) set aside 1.1 trillion won this year to implement 78 Arisu projects, including ones to replace old tap water pipelines, expand water quality testing categories and ramp up safety management.
SMG has come up with proactive investment plans to further raise the reliability of Arisu, the capital¡¯s tap water brand, as water quality satisfaction levels and its drinking rates have increased recently.
Seoul is implementing four major policies – proactively managing water quality, building a stable supply system, accident prevention-oriented safety management and strengthening of services to Seoulites¡¯ expectations levels.
Initially, the number of water quality testing categories will be expanded from the current 357 to 362.
SMG plans to build a tighter water quality safety net by expanding water quality testing categories in the wake of the rising necessity of managing unregulated new substances, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
Real-time water quality surveillance is done at 556 locations across the capital, and information is released at an intervals of 20 minutes via ¡°Arisu Map,¡± the website of Seoul Arisu.
Seoul Arisu plans to diversify free faucet water quality testing services.
Starting from March, night and holiday water quality services will be launched free of charge with the annual goal of about 2,000 testing cases.
Starting from May, non-face-to-face water testing services connected with delivery apps will be conducted with the annual goal of conducting 10,000 tests.

The step is designed to reflect diverse living patterns, such as one-person households and working couples.
SMG plans to strengthen water pipeline management. It will clean tap water pipelines annually, stretching about 700 km, including 48 km of major supply pipelines.
Seoul Water plans to expand aging infrastructure replacement.
It plans to replace long-standing tap water pipelines with high risks of accidents, stretching 111 km in length, based on analyses of leakage records and ground conditions.
The figure represents a 24 percent surge or an increase of 22 km compared to the previous year.
SMG plans to build three new water distribution reservoirs and expand two reservoirs by investing a combined 121 billion won to secure supply stability.
The step is designed to create a stable water supply environment for about 110,000 households in Dongjak, Gangbuk and Seocho ward areas.
SMG is ramping up construction on-the-spot safety management.
Seoul Water plans to inaugurate the Safety Red Card System, in which a red card is issued for serious violations, such as not wearing protective apparatuses, and two-time violators are expelled from the field.
SMG plans to expand services targeting Seoulites. Arisu saw its drinking rate climbing up to 75 percent last year, a 5.4 percentage point rise compared to the previous year.

SMG Reduces Sewage Usage Fees for Multi-Child Households
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Jan. 11 beneficiaries who have their sewage usage fee deducted by 30 percent will be expanded from households with three or more children to ones with two children, starting from March.
About 321,125 households will benefit from the step. Each beneficiary will likely save 4,522 won monthly in sewage usage fees – 54.256 won annually.
