Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) wrapped up the DX/AI Tech Exchange Workshop with the Canadian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and power grid operators at KHNP Central Research Institute in Daejeon on April 4.
The event brought together officials from the Canadian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Conexus, a CANDU industry technology cooperation institution, Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power and New Brunswick Power to discuss a variety of topics.
At the workshop, KHNP presented examples of next-generation technology applications designed to raise the safety and operational efficiency of power plants, such as Korean standard APR1400¡¯s DX technologies, AI-based equipment condition diagnosis & operation support technologies and digital twin and danger zone safety work robotic applications.
President Shin Ho-chul of KHNP Central Research Institute said, ¡°The workshop serves as a meaningful opportunity to share future nuclear power operation innovation cases using DX and AI technologies, and on the occasion of the tech exchange, we will strengthen a cooperation network with Canadian power grid operators and continue to expand cooperation, such as joint research.¡±
KHNP Resumes Continued Operation of Kori Unit 2
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power resumed the continued operation of Kori Nuclear Power Unit 2 on April 4 after completing 35 months of equipment upgrades.
Kori Unit 2 was put into commercial operation on Aug. 10, 1983, and the unit was stopped on April 8, 2023, as its operational license expired after 40 years of operation.
KHNP President Kim Hoe-cheon said, ¡°Amid continued energy supply uncertainties, the continued operation of a nuclear power plant unit based on safety is an important means of securing national energy security, and with the successful continued operation of Kori Unit 2, we will devote ourselves to ensuring a stable power supply by seamlessly preparing planned projects on the continued operation of nine other nuclear power plant units.¡±
KHNP Cooperates with Orano of France on Whole Cycle Nuclear Fuel
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power signed an MOU on cooperation in the whole cycle of nuclear power with Orano, a French multinational nuclear fuel cycle player, at Cheongwadae in Seoul on April 3.
KHNP and Orano have agreed to inaugurate a comprehensive cooperative regime on the whole cycle of nuclear fuel, ranging from procurement of uranium materials to conversion and enrichment.
Both sides plan to ramp up a mid- and long-term fuel supply foothold through cooperation connected with new production facilities and build a nuclear fuel supply stem without wavering outside environment changes.
The signing of the agreement took place with Korean and French presidents in attendance at a Korea-France summit event.
KAP 2026 Coincides with PBNC 2026 in Busan
KAP 2026 will coincide with PBNC 2026, bringing together Korean and international nuclear power industries, academic circles and policy makers in Busan.
The Korea Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF) will simultaneously host the Korea Atomic Power Annual Conference (KAP) 2026 and the Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference (PBNC) 2026 at BEXCO in Busan from April 22 to 24.
The events will take place under the theme ¡°Nuclear Energy for an AI-powered World.¡±
The theme reflects the fact that nuclear power has been highlighted as an axis of stable power supply amid a rapid increase in power demand caused by the growing adoption of AI and digital technologies.
The Korea Atomic Power Annual Conference (KAP) is the largest annual event of the Korean nuclear industry, organized by the Korea Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF) since 1986.
The Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference (PBNC) is a leading biennial forum organized by the Pacific Nuclear Council (PNC) that brings together nuclear professionals, policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders from across the Pacific Rim, Since its launch in 1976.
The event will be hosted and organized by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE), the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources and nuclear power industry circles.
It will bring together Korean and international nuclear power institutions, companies and experts to share and discuss the latest technologies, industry trends and policy issues.
The International Nuclear Expo 2026 (INEX 2026) will be held during the event.
Technologies and products related to nuclear power will be displayed, and a variety of side events, such as export consultation meetings with foreign buyers will be also held.
