Samsung Electronics achieved its best-ever performance on a quarterly basis by achieving the 50 trillion won milestone in operating profit in the first quarter of this year.
The feat was owed to explosive growth in memory chip demand, caused by the adoption of AI.
Preliminary figures, released by Samsung Electronics in an electronic notice on April 7, showed that the company chalked up 133 trillion won in sales and 57.2 trillion won in operating profit on a consolidated basis in the first quarter of 2026.
This marks a surprise performance, surpassing 36.8 trillion won in the market consensus.
The latest figures represent a 68.1 percent year-on-year surge in sales and a 755 percent year-on-year jump, respectively.
It is the first time that Samsung Electronics has topped the 100 trillion won milestone in sales on a quarterly basis.
At the center of the quarterly best-ever performance is the semiconductor super boom cycle.
It is owed to an explosive growth of memory demand coupled with the widespread adoption of AI and big tech companies’ investments.
Estimates showed that the average selling price of DRAMs and Nand flash memory surged more than 60 percent, respectively, in the first quarter of this year.
The rising price momentum is predicted to be maintained for the time being.
The market survey firm Trendforce forecasted that DRAM prices will be forecast to jump a maximum of 60 percent in the second quarter of the year.
Securities circles say the companywide business performance has been led by the Device Solutions Business, responsible for the semiconductor business.
The surprise business of the semiconductor business is owed to surging demand for HBMs for AI servers and price hikes of memory for general use.
Samsung Electronics supplied 5th generation HBM3Es to global big tech companies last year, and the company is ramping up technology competitiveness by preparing the mass production of HBM4.
