The Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM), celebrating its 50th anniversary, has declared the catchphrase a “New Journey toward Intelligent Mechanical Civilization” and its future vision “KIMM-NEXT 50” for the next 50 years.
KIMM held a ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding at KIMM headquarters in Daejeon on April 14 with about 400 people in attendance.
In a ceremony to declare a future vision, KIMM President Ryu Seok-hyun unveiled the vision “Mechanical Technology Making the Earth Coexist with Human Beings’ Prosperous Life,” top five challenging goals, KIMM’s future looks into the 2050s and its top five brands.
KIMM President Ryu delivered his 50th anniversary speech and commemorative speeches by Rep. Hwang Jeong-ah of the Democratic Party, Deputy Minister Kim Sung-soo in charge of research development policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo and Prof. Dr. Uwe Riedel, Director of the DLR Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes followed suit.
The next-generation AI humanoid robot “KAIROS,” being developed under the national strategy technology project initiative, dubbed “K-Moonshot” was introduced to the public stage for the first time at the anniversary event, as a symbol of KIMM’s future vision.
KAIROS has been developed by KIMM through the “autonomous growth AI humanoid strategy research group” of MSIT.

Even KAIROS is at an initial development stage, the robot has been highlighted as a representative brand since it pursues interaction with humanity and autonomous learning and presents the direction of the development of a future intelligent robot that will bring about innovation in the whole of the industries and daily life while coexisting with humanity.
KAIROS joined dignitaries to take the stage and pose for taking anniversary photos at the anniversary event, thus establishing itself as a symbol of connecting KIMM’s achievements in the past 50 years and Korea’s robot technology future in the next 50 years.
KIMM presented its five ambitious goals – designer of intelligent physical AI, carbon neutrality engining platform designed to save the Earth, super-precision, super-reliability advanced manufacturing equipment, a “healthy and safety society guardian,” and a new exploration engine from the poles to space.
“The Year 2050 Seen Ahead” depicts imagery of the Earth, space, home and a factory where KIMM achieves its vision in the research sector.
KIMM selected its five representative brands by mobilizing its core capabilities and future strategies to realize the “2050 blueprint.”
They are the humanoid robot technology “KAIROS;” the more precise, more reliable advanced manufacturing equipment solution “MANUX;” industry heat energy conversion technology for accelerating carbon neutrality “KHEATUP;” and virtual engineering platform for completing digital engineering “KIMM Cyber Labs.”
In his commemorative speech, KIMM President Ryu Seog-hyeon said, “A combined 8,000 staff members who have been with KIMM for the past 50 years have devoted themselves to accumulating technologies in areas, such as precision equipment, energy, environment, power, robot and defense sectors and contributed to building a technology foundation for Korea’s manufacturing competitiveness in shipbuilding, steel, automobile, plant and mechanical metal.”
“The past 50 years has become a period to dedicate itself to Korea’s industrialization, and the next 50 years will be a period of time in which KIMM will evolve into a research institute leader committed to leading an intelligent mechanical civilization and solving challenges facing humanity,” President Ryu added.
