POSCO Engineering and Construction Co. (POSCO E&C) said on Aug. 24 that it signed a contract with Long Son Petrochemical Co. to win a project to level the site for a petrochemical plant some 80 km from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam for 81.2 billion won.

The new plant is to be built on Long Son Island in the Baria Vung Tau Province in Vietnam some 2.31 million square meters in total space, and POSCO E&C is obligated to complete the project in September 2020.

Present at the signing included President Thammasek Sethaudom of Lon Son Petrochemical Co. and Director Ok In-hwan of the Headquarters of Infrastructure Project of POSCO E&C, among others.

The Korean construction firm won the project involving the construction of various infrastructure at the new petrochemical plant in January this year, such as storage tanks and a wharf for loading and unloading of petrochemical products, in addition to the ground leveling project.

Officials of POSCO Construction said they were able to validate the deep trust they have in their company by giving such large projects to POSCO Construction.

POSCO’s Steel Village was tabbed by the UN as an exceptional illustration of a social contribution activity that shifts the paradigm of corporate social responsibility in the global landscape. This is not the first time the UN recognized POSCO’s concerted efforts to reform poor residential areas around the world by applying POSCO’s unique sustainable resources combined with advanced techniques.

The Steel Village initiative had been previously registered on the UN’s SDG website as “ideal” and was selected in April as an eminent example by UN during its 50th conference of the UN Population Development Division.

On July 18, POSCO introduced its Steel Village project to 193 member countries of the UN, as an implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) at the United Nations High-level Political Forum event hosted by Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The SDG, also known as “2030 Agenda,” is a collection of 17 international goals established by the UN in 2015 to address social and economic issues worldwide while achieving the prosperous coexistence of humanity by the year 2030.

The Steel Village Project is one of POSCO’s leading global social contribution activities adopting POSCO’s steel and construction methods to create residential buildings and bridges for the underprivileged. Since 2014, POSCO has built 104 steel houses and steel bridges in Vietnam’s poor residential areas. And this year, a steel dome was constructed and donated to a Thai school where students can enjoy sports activities on bad weather days.

The host of this event, South Korean Ambassador to the UN, Tae-yul Cho commented, “The POSCO Steel Village is an authentic representation of CSR activity in the private sector that will shift the perception of developing countries and the global community of CSR activities. Accordingly, a call for active promotion is essential.”

POSCO’s head of external relations Jeong-sik Kwak also added, “It is an honor to share stories to inspire developing countries worldwide with POSCO’s aptitude for creating infinite possibilities despite scarcity of resources.”

Vietnam Steel Village is a town construction project that carried through in increments for three years since 2014 to accommodate around 500 homeless people in Tan Hoa commune, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, a location site of POSCO-Vietnam and POSCO SS VINA.

The land was provided by the local government, the construction costs supported by POSCO 1% Foundation while POSCO employees and POSCO global youth volunteer group, Beyond participated in the construction works.

포스코건설은 지난 17일 태국 SCG, Siam Cement Group의 투자법인인 베트남 LSP, Long Son Petrochemical과 812억원 규모의‘베트남 롱손 석유화학단지 부지조성 공사’계약을 체결했다고 24일 밝혔다.

이 프로젝트는 베트남 호치민에서 남동쪽으로 약 80km에 위치한 Baria Vung tau Province 州 Long Son 섬에, 석유화학단지 부지 231만㎡을 조성하고 연약지반을 개량하는 공사다. 총 공사비는 812억원이며, 내달 착공해 2020년 9월 준공을 목표로 하고 있다.

이 날 계약식에는 롱손 석유화학 Thammasak Sethaudom사장, 포스코건설 옥인환 인프라사업본부장 등 프로젝트 관계자들이 참석했다.

포스코건설은 올해 1월, 7천 5백억원 규모의 베트남 최초 석유화학단지 조성공사(석유화학제품 저장탱크 설치 공사, 입·출하 부두시설 공사)를 수주한 데 이어, 부지조성 공사를 추가로 수주함으로써 3개의 프로젝트를 동시에 수행하게 됐다.

포스코건설 관계자는“이번 계약으로 발주처인 롱손 석유화학(LSP)의 포스코건설에 대한 깊은 신뢰를 확인하는 계기가 됐다.”고 밝혔다.

베트남에서 ‘글로벌 하모니’ 사회공헌활동 전개

- 음악, 공연등 한류확산과 롱손지역 주민들에게 `생필품 키트` 전달

포스코건설은 지난 8일부터 17일까지 8박 10일간 문화체육관광부 산하 한국국제문화교류진흥원과 함께 베트남 Baria Vung tau성에서 Global harmony 사회공헌 활동`을 펼쳤다.

포스코건설은 붕따우성에서 진행 중인 Long Song Petrochemical Plant조성 공사와 고려아연 제강분진 재활용 설비 공사(ZOCV EAFD Recycling Plant) 현장 인근에서 진행됐다.

포스코건설 대학생봉사단 `해피빌더`는 바리아붕따우대학교 학생들과 함께 △한국문화교육 △양국 문화교류축제 등 다양한 사회공헌 활동을 펼쳤다.

이 외에도 포스코건설은 한국국제문화교류진흥원과 함께 바리아 붕따우성 롱손지역에 소재한 박당중학교 학생들이 보다 나은 학습 환경에서 배움의 꿈을 키워 나갈 수 있도록 컴퓨터, VR기기 등 다양한 멀티미디어 기자재, 문화예술 콘텐츠 등을 기증했고, 베트남 바리아 붕따우성 롱손지역의 사회적 배려계층 400가구에 생필품 키트를 전달했다.
