Acting President Lee Gyu-sung of Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp. (SLC) and Lee Dae-hyuck, head of the Global Eco Business Unit at SK ecoplant, pose after they struck an MOU on cooperation in greenhouse gas emission reduction projects to jointly cope with climate change at SLC headquarters in Seo-gu, Incheon, on March 22.

Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp. (SLC) is embarking on projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Southeast Asia and South America in cooperation with SK ecoplant.

The two institutions plan to secure the nation¡¯s carbon credits by capturing and incinerating gases of foreign landfill sites through collaboration between the public and private sectors.

SLC said that the corporation struck an MOU with SK ecoplant on cooperation in greenhouse gas emission reduction projects to jointly cope with climate change at SLC headquarters in Seo-gu, Incheon, on March 22.

The signing ceremony took place with acting SLC President Lee Gyu-sung and Lee Dae-hyuck, head of the Global Eco Business Unit at SK ecoplant, in attendance.

Under the deal, both sides agreed to collaborate on projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions using foreign landfill gases.

They are expected to have synergetic effects based on the two companies¡¯ strengths to secure leadership in the international market.

Those are: SLC¡¯s expertise on the 30-year-long operation of a landfill site and technologies related to waste to resources as well as SK ecoplant¡¯s business development capabilities and global network.

First of all, both sides will implement projects in South America, such as in Bolivia and Peru, in which large amounts of landfill site gases are predicted to be captured, before expanding them to Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

Acting SLC President Lee said, ¡°The Korean government now has to secure foreign carbon credits of 37.5 million tons to achieve its national determined contribution by 2030, and SLC plans to aggressively secure foreign carbon credits in cooperation with companies of the private sector.¡±

Lee, chief of the Global Eco Business Unit at SK ecoplant, said, ¡°SK Group has set a goal of contributing to reducing 1 percent of global carbon reduction targets by 2030, and we plan to achieve carbon emission reduction goals by continuing investment in international greenhouse gas emission reduction projects to meet the nation¡¯s and SK Group¡¯s targets.¡±

Meanwhile, SLC was designed as an institution specializing in implementing international greenhouse gas emission reduction projects in the waste sector by the government in December 2022. SLC is implementing the nation¡¯s first international greenhouse gas emission reduction project at Naranjin Enger Disposal Site in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

SLC Earns 38 Billion won in Profit by Generating Electricity Using Waste

Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp. (SLC) produced about 23MWh of electricity using waste landfill site gases last year.

The electricity amount is equivalent to what 250,000 citizens consume in one year. SLC made 38 billion won by selling electricity to Korea Electric Power Corp.

SLC has been operating a 50MW power generation facility since March 2007 that generates electricity using landfill gases, which are emitted in the course of decomposing waste at the landfill site.

SLC captured landfill gases of about 209 million cubic meters last year, 68 million cubic meters of which was utilized for generating electricity. The remainder was recycled at waste water sludge-to-resources facility or incinerated.

Kim Jin, head of the Energy Business Division at SLC, said, ¡°Now that waste treatment paradigm is shifting from landfill to resources circulation, our corporation is stepping up efforts to convert waste into resources and energy.¡±
