Woori Financial Group and the Woori Financial Future Foundation announced on June 1 that the opening ceremony was held for ¡°Woori Financial Road,¡± a pilot section of the East-West Trail that connects the eastern and western sides of the Korean Peninsula.
The East-West Trail, which crosses the Korean Peninsula, is a national project.
The trail is 849 kilometers from Uljin Geumgang Pine Forest in the east to the Facial Pine Forest in Taean in the west. Between the two are the Sokri Mountain Trail and the Naepo Cultural Forest Trail.
When it is completed in 2026 and designated as a national forest trail, visitors will be able to experience the unique history and cultures of the region, and an increase in visitors is expected to help rev up the local economy.
The opening ceremony was held at Hantijae, Uljin-gun of North Gyeongsang Province with the participation of Woori Bank CEO Lee Won-duk, Korea Forest Service Chief Nam Nam-hyun, Gyeongbuk Provincial Vice Governor Lee Dal-hee, and Uljin-gun Governor Son Byeong-bok among others.
Woori Financial Group participated in the construction of the 20-kilometer section between Howoli and Mangyangjeong in Uljin-gun, the starting point of the East-West Trail.
This section was heavily damaged by the Uljin-Samcheok wildfires, the longest wildfire in the recorded history of Korea in 2022. Although the fire threatened the pine forest in the section but the public-private sectors teamed up and successfully put out the fire.
¡°This year marks the 50th anniversary of Korea¡¯s national forestation project, and we hope that the first section of the East-West Trail will give hope to local residents affected by the wildfire as a space for healing and recovery, and help the local economy recover from the wild fire,¡± said Lim Jong-ryong, chairman of Woori Financial Group.
