As citizens¡¯ concern over a stream of indiscriminate violence rises, the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) said on Sept. 4 that it is providing support to citizens so they can return home safely by ramping up functions of the ¡°Ansimi (Safety) App.¡±

Starting Sept. 7, if anyone makes an emergency report via the Ansimi App, the app communicates: ¡°An emergency report has been accepted, a police officer has been dispatched.¡±

Starting in November, the app will allow users to access about 23,300 anti-crime emergency ¡°bells¡± located across the capital. If a user activates an emergency bell, each ward¡¯s CCTV control center will be connected, and a team will be dispatched in cooperation with police.

Starting in December, a safety guidance service will be launched so people can evade dangerous zones which have lots of violence, and direct pedestrians to routes which have been outfitted with safety facilities and video control services.

Meanwhile, the Ansimi App made its debut in the whole area of Seoul in October 2018, following a pilot program in 2017. Users are on the rise.

The app has logged 224,604 downloads and 211,481 uses in cumulative figures.

As indiscriminate crime occurred during the period between the fourth week of July and the first week of August, daily downloads had surged compared to two weeks earlier.

Kim Sun-soon, the head of the Women & Family Policy Affairs Office at SMG, said, ¡°At a time when recent occurrence of indiscriminate crimes had made people walking alone feel uneasy, the Ansimi App has been continuously upgraded so it can be a strong companion of returning home safely, I hope any Seoulite will download from his or her smartphone and receive help from SMG in case of an emergency.¡±
