Jincheon Mayor Song Ki-seop stressed that his 2nd year in office in the 8th publicly elected local government is a significant period for realizing fast regional development.
In his speech at a monthly meeting of about 300 county officials Mayor Song said, “We have to ponder the direction of future county administration by objectively assessing the direction and speed of policies that have been implemented for the past year.”
He warned of being obsessed with short-term performances when it comes to a shift from quantitative development to qualitative development.
Mayor Song asked for policies the county had implemented for the past year to be evaluated in a stringent fashion, and trimming administration costs based on objective and scientific analysis.
“Now is a significant period for determining whether population will rise or decline.” He urged the participants to implement population policies with more systematic and greater effects, such as diverse development projects and expanding settlement conditions.
During his 8th publicly elected local government term, he said Jincheon will have to ramp up economic policy functions, such as investment attraction, job creation, expanding economically active population and regional residents’ income rise and diversifying of its industry structure.
In particular, he said, the launch of the Seoul Metropolitan inland railway will be a major factor for future regional development, and Jincheon is devoted to implementing the project without interruption, with a prior feasibility study being under way.
Mayor Song demanded Jincheon’s successful implementation of local autonomy ESG the county has spearhead ahead of other local governments.
In his New Year’s message, Mayor Song said Jincheon aims to realize a great challenge of being elevated to a city by making the most of the outstanding achievements it had made so far.

Jincheon Devotes Itself to Implementing Urban Renewal Projects
Jincheon has been hitting the gas to implement urban renewal projects to reinvigorate the old downtown sections.
The county has been implementing the “Comprehensive Community Center” and “Urban Renewal Eoullim Center.”
Some 14.2 billion won the county received after winning an urban renewal project contest will be invested into the implementation of the projects.
Meanwhile, while launching the 8th publicly elected local government, Jincheon County announced the so-called “9. 9. 9. Era,” calling for achieving $90,000 in per head gross regional domestic product (GRDP), securing 900 billion won in county budget and achieving 1 trillion won in cumulative investment amounts for the ninth consecutive year.
Jincheon posted 206.3 billion won in regional tax revenues in 2021, topping the 200 billion won mark in its history. Relocating blue-chip companies in the county area has contributed to raising regional corporate tax revenues.
If companies which have struck investment deals launch full-fledged operations, Jincheon is predicted to see its county budget, which stood at about 700 billion won in 2021, surge.
Residents who settle down in the county in search for good jobs are on the rise. Jincheon has posted a higher population growth rate and the highest per head GRDP across the nation.
Jincheon logged 89.61 million won in the per head GRDP in the 2019, ranking first among the counties of Chungcheonbuk-do.
The figure represents more than twice the average of the Chungcheonbuk-do area. Jincheon’s population has been on the rise continuously since August 2014 on top of the higher per head GDP.
